Felt Black Cat Garland

A row of black cats strung along a length of jute, each one with a slightly different set to its ears because each was shaped by a turn of the hand, not stamped from a mould. This is Halloween in a single long gesture. Drape it over the fireplace, along the bookshelf, across the window, and the room is dressed; one line does the work of a dozen small decorations. Four feet of hand-worked wool, light enough for a couple of small hooks, with nothing on it that can chip, crack, or shatter. When the season ends it coils back into the box and waits. Some households buy a new garland every autumn and bin the old one in November. Some households keep this one, specifically, because a line of cats that has crossed the same hearth for years stops being seasonal stock and becomes part of the room. Made to be kept.
