Bat Garland
A run of small felt bats along a jute cord, wings set mid-spread, each one caught at a slightly different angle the kind of difference that only comes from a thing made by hand rather than poured into a tray. This is the garland for the doorway, the stair rail, the long edge of a shelf that wants one clean line of Halloween rather than a scatter of small things. You hang it once. It does the whole wall. Four feet of worked wool, light enough for two hooks, with nothing on it that can break. When the season ends it coils into the box and waits there, wings and all, for the next time the nights draw in. Some people replace their Halloween every autumn. Some people keep this line of bats, specifically, because a garland that has crossed the same doorway for years stops being a purchase and becomes the way the season starts. Made to be kept.
